An amphitheatre of golden sand closed by an oleander-filled canyon, with six natural caves opening directly onto the beach: Cala Luna is the most theatrical cove in the Gulf of Orosei.
The beach of caves
The caves are Cala Luna's signature: wide, cool, carved by the sea over millennia. At midday they are the perfect refuge from the sun; at first light they frame the kind of scene photographers chase for years. Behind the beach, the freshwater lagoon of the Codula di Luna hosts turtles and dragonflies.
Boat or hike?
By boat it is easy: daily departures from Santa Maria Navarrese and Arbatax, often combined with the Fico Cave. On foot, the classic trail starts at Cala Fuili (Dorgali): 1h45 of ups and downs through the maquis with constant sea views. Experienced hikers can walk the long, beautiful Codula di Luna instead.
Our tips
- The beach is big but there is a single kiosk: bring water and fruit.
- Stay until 4pm: when the boats leave, silence returns.
- In spring the oleanders of the codula are in bloom — pure spectacle.
